Flight Instruments Department

Gyro & Attitude Indicator Repair

Gyros, attitude director indicators and radio direction indicators are core Flight Instruments work — tested, repaired, and overhauled in house.

Gyroscopic instruments give the crew attitude and rate information independent of outside visual reference. In the panels we support that group covers the attitude director indicator (A.D.I.), the radio direction indicator (R.D.I.), and the gyros that drive them.

These are precision electromechanical units — bearings, gimbals, synchros and servo loops — and they are the classic candidates for overhaul rather than replacement, particularly on legacy military airframes where new-production units are no longer available. Air Shunt's Flight Instruments department tests, repairs, and overhauls them under FAA certificate YD2R315L.

What This Department Handles

  • H.S.I.s, A.D.I.s, R.D.I.s and flight directors
  • Altimeters, gyros & air speed indicators
  • Compass, course and distance indicators
  • Rate-of-turn racks, steering computers, mode couplers

Capability is confirmed by part number. Air Shunt maintains over 100,000 repair capabilities — send the part numbers you need and we will confirm coverage, availability, and pricing directly.

Repair, Overhaul, or Exchange

Every unit we quote fresh tag is freshly overhauled or tested with a fresh tag. Where an exchange makes more sense than a repair, we can often supply from inventory instead — we hold over 10 million spare parts on hand, and in-stock aircraft parts are ready for immediate delivery. All products are subject to prior sale.

Airframes We Support

DC-8, MD-80, B-727 and B-767 on the commercial side; A-4, A-6, A-7, F-4, F-5, F-15, F-16 and F/A-18 fighters; CH-3, CH-46, CH-47 and CH-53 rotary wing; C-123, C-130 and C-160 transports; and P-3, E-2 and E-3 maritime patrol and airborne early warning aircraft. The complete manifest is on the platforms page.

Approvals

Work is carried out at our Chatsworth, California facility under FAA Part 145 repair station certificate YD2R315L. We also hold EASA Part-145 approval EASA.145.4087, are certified to ISO 9001:2015, and are an ARSA member in good standing. Certificates are available to download on the quality page.

Common Questions

Do you overhaul gyros for out-of-production military aircraft?

Legacy airframes are a large part of what we do. The platforms we support include the A-4, A-6, A-7, F-4, F-5, C-123 and C-160 alongside current fleets — see the full platform list. Confirm capability by sending the part number.

Do you handle the indicator and the computer that drives it?

Both departments are on site. Flight Instruments covers the A.D.I., R.D.I. and gyros; Cockpit & Controls covers the pitch and roll computers, steering computers and mode couplers behind them.

Are you approved outside the United States?

Yes. In addition to FAA repair station certificate YD2R315L we hold EASA Part-145 approval EASA.145.4087 and are certified to ISO 9001:2015. Details and downloadable certificates are on our quality page.
